Three weeks later, Will and Lexie settled into a modest apartment not far from Angela and Kevinâs trendy Beacon Hill neighborhood. They had returned to their former jobs and put the events at Altmover Manor behind them.
âI have a late meeting this evening,â Will told her before shoving a slice of toast in his mouth.
âThat was fast. Itâs not even your third day back.â She adjusted his crooked tie. âDonât let Forrester and Whitney work you to death like they did last time.â
âI donât have much choice, do I? We need the money.â The insurance company was dragging its feet with the settlement, and the new apartment and furnishings had cleaned out what savings they had left. His eyes devoured her snug green dress. âYou got another client meeting today?â
âYep.â She went to the coffeemaker.
Will lifted his mug to his lips. âFifth one this week, right?â
âKevin has been referring new people to me. Every time Mother says I told you so about the house, Kevin sends another lawyer, housewife, or golf buddy my way. I think heâs making up for Angelaâs hounding.â
âSheâll never let us forget about it, Iâm sure.â He held his cup out to her and scowled. âWhat is this?â
âThe coffee and chicory you wanted.â
âDonât buy me this stuff anymore. Itâs too strong.â
âNo problem.â Lexie grinned while lifting her coffee to her lips.
He took his mug to the sink. âWhy are you smirking?â
She put her drink down. âWhen we lived at Altmover Manor, you changed. You got a sudden love of coffee, were saying some strange things, and a few times in bed, you ...â
His lips smashed together, and redness tinged his cheeks. âWhat?â
Should she tell him her suspicions? âYou were playful ... in the bedroom. Maybe it was the house.â
âI have no idea what youâre talking about,â Will said, his voice peppered with irritation. âI didnât change. Iâm always playful in bed.â
Magnus dropped in, wearing his usual red vest, long black coat, and ascot tie. âYou still havenât told him it was me? Lexie, you should be honest with your future husband.â
She glared at Magnus. âI guess Iâm still coming to terms with everything we went through.â
âThat makes two of us.â Will turned away from the sink.
Magnus motioned to the hallway. âSomeone is at the front door.â
A light chirping sound rolled around the kitchen.
âWhoâs that at this hour?â Will checked the microwave clock. âItâs not even eight.â
âIâll get it.â Lexie rushed to the kitchen door. âYou eat your breakfast.â
âYou burnt the eggs again,â Will called as she exited the kitchen.
Lexie hurried past the sparse furniture and bare white walls in the living room, cringing at the reminder of all they had lost in the fire.
She opened the front door, a tall gentleman holding a black chauffeurâs hat under his right arm greeted her. His short gray-tipped hair added a coldness to his face. The bulge of his black suit accentuated his thick, muscular body.
âLexie Arden?â
Lexie put her hand on the door. âYes?â
The man held out a white envelope.
